Veterans Day W.O.W. Project Planning & Reflection Sheet - PDF
Honor our nation’s heroes with this student-led Veterans Day art project! This W.O.W. (Wonderful Original Work) Plan encourages students to research the meaning and history of Veterans Day before creating an original artwork inspired by what they’ve learned.
Students explore guiding questions such as:
What is Veterans Day and why is it observed on November 11?
How is it different from Memorial Day?
What symbols and emotions best represent the service and sacrifice of veterans?
After completing a short research section, students plan their art piece by identifying a fact to highlight, a symbol to include, and an emotion to communicate—fostering thoughtful, intentional artmaking.
The WOW Plan includes built-in checkpoints for teacher feedback, self-assessment, and an artist statement, making it perfect for encouraging reflection and craftsmanship.
Use it as:
A stand-alone Veterans Day project
A companion to the Norman Rockwell Veterans Day WAAG
A meaningful way to connect artmaking to civic awareness and gratitude
Includes:
✔️ Research prompts with suggested kid-friendly links
✔️ Planning and thumbnail sketch section
✔️ Teacher and student feedback boxes
✔️ Artist statement and rubric checklist
A great way to help students build empathy, practice independent art planning, and create heartfelt tributes through art.
